The Forest and the Fire: What Artemis and Achilles Reveal About Reclaiming Your Professional Sovereignty -- and Power

Professional reinvention for lawyers and leaders: when achievement becomes armor, true strength demands that you break it.

A determined man in a dark suit walks through a neon-lit forest toward the Parthenon as a shadowed figure watches, symbolizing the confrontation with inner darkness on the path to rebirth.
The eyes in the forest are watching you.

The forest is suddenly still.

You can feel it before you see it: the hush, the pulse, the invisible gaze of something ancient. It's just beyond the trees. Every step towards it sounds too loud. And you are afraid.

You reach for your phone, but there's no signal. No calendar invites. No conference calls. Just the breath of wind through branches, and the unmistakable knowledge that you are being watched.

Somewhere in this sacred wilderness, Artemis -- the goddess of the hunt, the defender of personal sovereignty -- draws back her bow.

She's aiming at the parts of you that pretend. The parts that hide behind busyness and high IQ and the illusion of control. The arrows of Artemis don't kill; they expose. And once they've struck, there is no going back to the safe, sterile comfort of your office -- or your career itself.

Professional reinvention for lawyers and leaders requires nothing less.

The forest is silent. Ahead, a temple burns with light. Your journey to the mythic summit begins.

Walking Through the Forest

You know this forest. I know it, too. We've both walked it -- in the moments when success turns into camouflage, career feels like a path to nowhere, or the partner title or executive office feels less like an achievement and more like a suffocating iron mask.

I hear this from my clients all the time. They've sat in the courtroom, or the conference room, knowing their work inside and out. They succeeded because of it. But even as promotions pile up, projects close, and metrics shine, their hatred of life, and frustration about the future, only gets worse.

In my case, the breaking point was stark and abrupt, like a wooden beam stressed so far that it suddenly snaps.

But for many other high-achievers, it's quiet. It shows up in the moment you stop caring.

That's when the goddess calls you back to the forest.

Achilles is a mirror. Do you see ALL that he represents?

The Mythic Mirror: Artemis and Achilles

In my Myths, Leadership & Life conversation with former attorney Stephanie Trager, we step into that forest together -- to the place where Artemis and another mythical icon, the Trojan War hero Achilles, reveal some uncomfortable truths about modern leadership and career paths.

Artemis, unbound by convention and committed to taking complete responsibility for her destiny, lives by a single law: alignment. She will not negotiate her integrity. She hunts only when the soul demands it -- and never for trophies.

For professionals who have given away too much of themselves to the demands of institutions, whether through time or abandonment of their own core identity, Artemis is a reminder that leadership without boundaries is self-erasure.

Achilles, by contrast, is all flame and fury. His strength is absolute, his passion unstoppable -- just like many who manage to make it to the top of their organizations or their larger professional circles. But his undoing lies in the one place he refuses to acknowledge: his vulnerability -- the very quality that makes him human.

Achilles is the embodiment of every attorney or executive who believes that drive and discipline are the same as purpose, and that victory on a career's battlefields will somehow make emotional, social, and spiritual needs go away.

Together, Artemis and Achilles show us the polarity that defines so many high performers: the obsession with control versus the terror of surrender. Both are illusions. Both must die for true power to be born.

Stephanie calls this death "repurposing."

Repurposing the Mind ... and the Mission

During our conversation, Stephanie and I explored what it really means to repurpose an unhappy executive or lawyer's mind -- to take that relentless analytical power and aim it inward, toward meaning. Lawyers, in particular, are trained to dissect reality, to argue truth into submission. But what happens when the courtroom is your own consciousness? When the evidence is your exhaustion?

Repurposing your life offers a way out -- by remembering that the mind that built your career can also rebuild your life. And Artemis and Achilles show exactly how to let the repurposing start.

Artemis demands that you take time for silence, intuition, a return to the body. Achilles demands honesty, the willingness to see where pride has become prison.

Between them lies the sacred path of leadership reborn: power that no longer seeks permission, and peace that no longer requires performance.

The moment you step into that forest -- whether through crisis, reflection, or sheer refusal to remain numb -- you begin to sense the truth: you were never meant to be ordinary. You were meant to lead with presence, with purpose, with fire.

But fire needs air. It needs space. It needs you to stop suffocating under the weight of your own legend. It needs you to take action.
