I first met Lynnaire Johnston, LinkedIn expert, author of "Link∙Ability: 4 Powerful Strategies to Maximize Your LinkedIn Success," and co-author of "Business Gold – Building Awareness, Authority and Advantage with LinkedIn Company Pages" during the dark days of the pandemic lockdowns. Although Lynnaire is known for her expertise in helping professionals leverage LinkedIn to achieve their career goals, her love of gardening, radiant personality, and passion for her work immediately turned her into a personal favorite.
As thanks for inviting me to speak on her Link∙Ability Livestream, I asked Lynnaire to summarize our conversation as a guest blogger here and add some pro tips of her own. As you'll see, she is extremely adept at putting together action items that are both entertaining and easy to do.
As mentioned above, on a recent LinkedIn Live I hosted, Scott and I had an in-depth, deeply personal, and sometimes hilarious discussion about charisma, Greek myths, and how to make your LinkedIn presence sing like a siren.
What Is Charisma?
Key to the entire discussion was Scott's definition of charisma: the ability to command attention to achieve a positive outcome. He said it involves connection, memorable communication, and emotional resonance.
How to do that on LinkedIn: Reach out meaningfully: When inviting people to connect, make it personal and thoughtful. Follow up with a well-thought-through ‘thank you for connecting’ message. I often send a short video to add a personal touch.
Do We All Have Charisma?
Scott says everyone can learn charisma, but not everyone expresses it due to a lack of tools, confidence, or prioritization.
How to do that on LinkedIn: Write your profile in a way that evokes emotion and takes people on your journey. Use words and phrases not commonly found in a CV or résumé to stand out.
How to Know If You Have Charisma
Charisma isn't about being loud or dramatic; it’s about making a positive impact outside of oneself.
How to do that on LinkedIn: Be generous. Refer members of your network to others. Share your knowledge and experience so others can learn from you.
How to Develop Charisma
Connect the brain (clear message) to the heart (emotional expression) and embrace your unique style. Don't change based on negative feedback.
How to do that on LinkedIn: Tell personal stories about the challenges you’ve faced and overcome. Create videos where people can see and hear you, which is increasingly important with the new video feed feature LinkedIn is rolling out.
Leadership and Charisma
During the live stream, we discussed how charisma can significantly enhance leaders’ influence and potential. It can create possibilities and inspire others beyond wealth or authority.
How to do that on LinkedIn: Step out of the shadows. Share your knowledge and expertise. Encourage your team members to do the same. Embrace new ways of communicating via videos and events.
Our Suggestions for Using Charisma on LinkedIn
Authenticity and creativity in writing and video content are crucial.
Use AI tools wisely to improve clarity but maintain your unique voice and stories.
Engage audiences with unique, memorable content that reflects your true self.
Integrate personal interests, such as Greek myths or gardening, to differentiate yourself and make you memorable.
Embrace what makes you unique and connect it to your professional presence.
Always remember: being bold and not fearing judgment is essential in business and personal expression. Keep this in mind as you learn to make your own LinkedIn journey epic.
