Are you living an extraordinary life?
Or, are you pushing that aside to solely focus on the day-to-day to manage finances, family, social life, etc.?
In other words, are you focused on the placement of commas in a contract -- while forgetting about the purpose of the entire agreement?
Tapping into your full potential means living a vibrant, extraordinary life where you feel inspired by your destiny. If you’re smart enough to get a JD, pass the bar, and practice law, you have this sort of capability within you. And you’ve certainly worked hard enough to deserve it.
And, I unequivocally contend: if you are not striving for that life that you love -- where you both feel inspired and inspire others -- even if only incrementally, you are actually committing a grave moral wrong.
Following Your Call
That is why I will only work with clients -- attorneys or otherwise -- who inspire me … those who are committed to becoming, in their own unique way, the professional equivalent of Greek gods. That doesn't mean that they ignore the necessities of living, but it 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 mean that they keep the big picture in mind. That they understand the true implications of ignoring the call of a life that is right for them, particularly if it involves leadership.
When a brilliant, powerful, and creative prospect recently told me that they "needed" to focus exclusively on their daily routine -- not on becoming the transformative leader that they obviously are capable of being -- I asked whether they had ever considered the needs of those they could help. A long silence ensued.
"No,” they admitted, "I had not."
𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 is an ethical issue. The world doesn't revolve around any single one of us. The call to greatness isn't just about you. It's about those desperate for what you can provide.
Understanding Your Values
That is why Day One of my Signature Program starts with a lengthy and deep process of identifying and understanding your inner truth values. Whether you're stepping into a leadership position or seeking to leave the law for a life that you actually love, understanding these values is essential to fulfilling the ethical imperatives that lay underneath your ideal life.
The Key Takeaway
Ethics and values are meaningless if they exist purely as slogans. They are discovered, as I tell my clients, by examining how you respond to quandaries that actually exist in the real world -- such as what you choose to do with your professional life.
Doing that is no easy task. In fact, it’s akin to wrestling with the gods themselves. But it opens the door to the resilience, creativity, and connection that can help you move past a legal career mired in frustration into a life that has true impact -- that feels good, too.
Life is too short to achieve your untapped potential -- and the need that others have for you is too great. When standing at the crossroads, what route will you take?
